Celebrating Accomplishment

Four years ago, when Kidspire partnered with Mukutan Conservancy to open Land of Hope school in Laikipia County, the most important goal was to get children into school. With 70% of adults in the region lacking literacy and few school age children attending school, we knew there was an incredible opportunity to provide the community with access to a local school while also showcasing the positive impact that can be driven by quality education.

Now, as students advance in the curriculum from Pre-K to Kindergarten to Grade 1 to Grade 2, we make a habit of celebrating their accomplishments. It is important to acknowledge their learning, help build their motivation and self-confidence, and help keep their parents and local community members informed about the meaningful progress their children are demonstrating.

This past November 5 was one of those days for celebrating student accomplishments. As our first class of students - students who started as Pre-K learners in January 2022 - completed Grade 1 and advanced to Grade 2, it was important to celebrate with them…and with their parents. For the majority of the learners attending Land of Hope, reaching Grade 2 makes them the first in their families to reach this mid-primary school milestone.

It has been an absolute joy for our teaching team to see them gain and develop their literacy skills in both English and Swahili. And our celebration featured plenty of opportunities for students to showcase these skills. Much to the delight of their parents.

As our celebration day ceremony got started, the children’s parents enthusiastically started off in song (see the video below). The parents and community representatives were quick to express their gratitude that they now have access to a local school, acknowledge their appreciation for the quality of the education their children are receiving, and express their hope that the school can continue for years to come.

Knowing that transformational community impact will take time - and ongoing access to quality education - we share their hope. Here’s to many years of ongoing education at Land of Hope!
